Health Camp

In Waco to see the most beautiful red haired baby, we stopped at a new burger place. My fascination with blogging started coming to life while waiting for bacon cheeseburgers, onion rings and oreo chocolate shakes. I know several foodies out there who write about fancy restaurants or even hole in the wall restaurants but who ever eats with their kids? I do...all the time. Not so much fancy restaurants but definitely hole in the wall restaurants. If your restaurant was a former gas station...we will find you.

Health Camp is not a former gas station but it has been around since 1949 so you know it is going to be good. How does a place that serves cheeseburgers, hotdogs, fries, onion rings, 44 flavors of shakes including bubble gum and cotton candy achieve the name Health Camp? In 1949 no one knew about trans fats. There were four basic food groups. Bread, Dairy, Vegetables and Meat. If you think about it...it was a healthy meal you could eat with your hands.

After surviving the traffic circle in Waco, we looked up to see this.

As we walked in a sign announcing they served RC Cola on the tap was proudly displayed. My dad would be so excited!!!!! They even have Diet RC. Everyone ordered a burger except G man. He had a grilled cheese on Texas Toast with fries and a chocolate shake. All the burgers are made with 100% fresh angus beef. The boys ordered bacon cheeseburger baskets with fries and shakes. J Money had chocolate and Big E had oreo. Sweet D and his brother ordered cheeseburger baskets with fries and a drink. I had the burger basket with onion rings and a mixed drink (Diet RC with a little bit of Dr. Pepper). Speaking of Dr. Pepper, if you are ever in Waco and enjoy DP you should go to the museum. The DP really is better. Here is the bill for 3 adults and 3 kids at Health Camp. It's not cheap.

Our meal was pretty good. I have had better burgers, but I have had worse. The diner is nostalgic. The boys loved it. The bacon is cooked well and you get plenty. (You don't have to look at your receipt to remember if you asked for bacon.) The fries are frozen not fresh hand cut. This is by far the best thing on the menu.

I could have eaten two of these. I would probably even drive back to Waco, hold a baby all day and eat shakes at Health Camp.
